Lower Back Pain and Sciatica

Lower back pain and Sciatica are one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints typically presenting to Mixed Osteo. This correlates with the research that shows that lower back pain is one of the two of the most common musculoskeletal complaints, and that the general population will most likely experience it some point in their life.

At our clinic is located in Kensington, we see a range of people and athletes with back problems, lower back problems and sciatica. These can be caused by job roles including sedentary (desk based) or physical (manual handling) as well as the active or sporting individual. Back pain and lower back pain is especially common in combat sports ( MMA/ BJJ) due to the nature of the sport and its requirements, sometimes putting the back in compromising positions.

The vast majority of back pain and lower back pain is musculoskeletal in nature and typically is caused by the joints, ligaments or surrounding soft tissue muscles.  In many circumstances, the majority of back pain and lower back pain will improve over 0-6 weeks, with some cases taking longer to heal (6+ weeks).

The role of the allied health practitioner (osteopath, physiotherapist, chiropractor, myotherapist) when you present to the clinic with acute  back pain or lower back pain is to assess you, provide you with treatment and management advice and reassurance.  Treatment and management may involve manual therapy, movement therapy, exercise prescription, pain management and advice around training plus ergonomics so to avoid any further aggravation or reduce reoccurrences of your complaint.

Common Lower back pain complaints can include:
