What Melbourne's Weather Does to Your Muscles

What Melbourne's Weather Does to Your Muscles

Melbourne's weather shifts fast, and training through it — especially in the cooler months — can affect how your body feels day to day.

Cold weather and warm-up

Muscles generally take longer to warm up properly in cold conditions. Training or competing without an adequate warm-up in winter can leave you feeling tighter afterwards than the same session would in warmer weather.

Indoor training through winter

A lot of combat sport and gym training happens indoors year-round, which helps, but travelling to and from training in the cold — especially straight after a session — can undo some of that benefit.

Sudden weather swings

Melbourne's known for four seasons in a day, and some people notice their bodies feel stiffer around sudden temperature or pressure changes, though this varies a lot person to person.

What helps

A proper warm-up regardless of the season, layering up before and after training in cold weather, and treating persistent tightness rather than assuming it's "just the weather" and waiting for it to pass.
