Remedial Massage After a Long Flight or Long Drive

Remedial Massage After a Long Flight or Long Drive

Long periods of sitting in one position — whether on a plane or in a car — take a toll that's easy to underestimate, particularly on the hips, lower back and neck.

Why travel is harder on the body than a normal day at a desk

At a desk you can usually get up and move. On a long flight or drive, that's much more limited, and the seated position is often worse — cramped, reclined awkwardly, or held for many hours without a proper break.

What tends to tighten up

Hip flexors from prolonged sitting, lower back from limited support, and neck and shoulders from awkward head positions, especially trying to sleep sitting up.

What helps in the days after

Gentle movement as soon as practical, rather than resting completely. A remedial massage session in the days following a long trip can help address the specific tightness travel tends to leave behind, particularly if you're heading straight into training.

If you're travelling for competition

Worth booking a session for shortly after you land, if your schedule allows, rather than waiting until tightness has settled in.
