Remedial Massage and Sleep: Why Poor Sleep Undoes Recovery

Remedial Massage and Sleep: Why Poor Sleep Undoes Recovery

You can book remedial massage every fortnight and still feel permanently tight if sleep isn't part of the picture. It's one of the less glamorous factors in recovery, but one of the most important.

The connection

Most physical recovery happens outside the massage table — largely during sleep. Consistently short or poor-quality sleep means your body has less opportunity to recover between training sessions, which shows up as tightness that keeps returning no matter how often you get treated.

What this looks like in practice

Clients training hard but sleeping poorly often notice massage helps in the short term but tightness returns faster than expected. That's usually a sign sleep, not treatment frequency, is the bigger lever to pull.

What's worth prioritising

Consistent sleep timing tends to matter more than chasing a specific number of hours. Even small, sustainable improvements to sleep routine often do more for recovery than an extra massage session would.

Where massage still fits

It's still a useful tool — just not one that can fully compensate for consistently poor sleep.
